As we all know, with the introduction of CS and better rewards, IP Booting has become rampant in NHL 17. Although there is little we can do to stop the IP Booting, we can take steps to ensure we protect ourselves. Let me start off by saying that I am in no way a tech expert. What I am sharing with you is research I have done on my own. If there are any tech experts out there that would like to correct me or give additional steps, please do.
From what I have found there are two ways you can ensure you are protected against IP Booters. One methods involves spending a bit of money if you want to be well protected (it can also be free but provides minimal protection) and the other is completely free. Here are the two methods that can help you out (Note: they do not GUARANTEE full protection but, will make a big difference):
1) Virtual Private Network (VPN) Method
How a VPN protects you is basic... It hides your real IP Address. The IP Booter needs the real IP Address of your router in order to flood it with loads of information. With a VPN, you may live in Canada but your IP Address will come up as one in the USA (if you so chose). So when the Booter finds your address it will be some random USA IP address and when they try to send an overload of information to that address (which they think is your real one) the information will not actually go to your router.
This method may not work against people that are good at this type of stuff and have high end software/hardware for things like IP Booting or DDOSing. But, let's face it, it is NHL and the majority of people doing this are most likely teenagers with crappy software. You are basically just protect yourself by hiding your true identity so to speak.
There is a con to using a VPN (as brought up by /u/nickmdp ), and that is the added latency you will have. The better VPN software will reduce this but, it is something you have to consider when weighing the pros and cons of having a VPN.
This method does have a cost to it if you want a decent VPN software, there are free ones and Windows comps usually have a built in VPN software (however, you need to have a good amount of upload bandwidth or so I read). A simple search of google can find you tons of VPNs and how to set up your own on a Windows computer if you so desire. You can checkout this article on tech radar for the best VPNs.
Recommended Software: ExpressVPN
This is probably the best way to protect yourself or so I could find. I apologize to the tech guys out there if I explained it wrong, please feel free to step in and correct me.
2) Indicator Method
This method is simple and free but, not fool proof. You just want to look for indicators of an IP Booter during the pre-game cut scene and during the face-off/beginning of the game (you want to give yourself enough time to pull a first minute quit).
Some indicators include but, are not limited to:
- A Goalie record of something like 100-0-0 on a Bronze, Silver or cheap gold goalie.
- A starter team
- A random team name (like a random combination of letters: afdshwrtthhgh).
- Hesitation or taking a long time to ready up or spending an unusually long time in the settings or line-up change menus. (As shared by /u/ratracesurvivor )
- If you can get a friend to look at their profile (most people that IP Boot are usually alternate accounts). Look to see how many games/trophies they have. Only having NHL 17 and almost 0 trophies is a good indicator of an IP Booter. However, it COULD just be someone playing on an alt. account.
- The connection (the little box in the top right corner of the screen that say Good, Fair or Poor) is bouncing around all over the place. (This is just an ASSUMPTION as the infamous BobbyOrr IP Booter on PS4's connection was doing this. Which is what made me back out in the first place.)
- You do not recognize their player on the Jersey select screen (and their team name is not the McNiggler's - PS4 people will get this. Basically, some people have pro player cards).
- Inactivity at the start of the game (in combination with another indicator). If they are just inactive at the beginning of the game and have no other indicators of an IP Booter they probably aren't an IP Booter. They are probably just going to the washroom, watching a video, answering a text, talking to someone, or whatever and they just didn't realize the game started.
This is what I was able to come up with for indicators. If someone has more indicators, please share them.
Just be aware guys! Hope this article helps!
Again, I apologize if some of the things I said are incorrect. As I said before, I am not a tech expert and I am just sharing my research with community. If any tech guys on this sub see something wrong or left out please correct me!
Tips from the Community:
From /u/JDSleeper on what to do if you have been IP Booted but, cannot get back online:
also, once you are kicked if you have trouble getting back online they're still sending packets. Go to your computer, click network settings, adapter options, and it will show your network. Right click on the icon, then click disable, wait a few seconds and re-enable it. If your isp allows ip changes it should resolve the problem. If not unplug your modem and router for awhile and let it fix itself, this takes longer but also works for me at least
From /u/BeefJyrkii on how to guarantee protection for yourself (EXPENSIVE!):
Oh I forgot to add into my comment that the only Guaranteed these kids will not be able to boot you off line is if you buy DDOS protection from a company. DDOS protection is extremely expensive and can cost you $1000+ a month, but will guarantee you can't get ddosed
